Powley, Adam

I was an Occupational Health and safety nurse, looking after the employees for a private hospital in my native Brazil prior to joining the Advanced Mechatronics apprenticeship programme. When I came to the UK I went to college to study BTEC level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering. I chose an apprenticeship over university or work because I can study towards my qualifications, gain practical knowledge and also earn money at the same time.

On a day to day basis my role involves following other technicians during planned preventative maintenance; or when we have a call on the radio from other departments who require support. I also help with some projects such as electrical installations, heater installation and all the safety precaution that have to be considered when installations are taking place.

As part of the programme, I am learning how to apply all the safety theory for myself and my colleagues. Secondly, it has change my life hugely. The opportunity to gain experience in an engineering field is so valuable to me and working with amazing professionals who are always ready to share their knowledge and experience with me is something that has helped me to grow both professionally and personally.

I would recommend this apprenticeship to future applicants because is an amazing way of starting, or changing a professional career while earning money. At the end of the apprenticeship, you finish with a degree-level qualification in tech too, something that no one can take away from you, which will also change your life.
