What will I learn as I progress through my course?
The SHE Apprenticeship is a programme that combines on the job learning with academic study. The purpose is to equip learners with the competencies they need to operate successfully and safely in their role. This scheme is suitable for those in H&S teams because it offers a well-rounded and comprehensive education in a range of safety related topics, contributes to increased levels of engagement and vastly improves the skills and knowledge of its participants. Apprentices will have opportunity to develop the safety related skills and knowledge that will enable them to fully contribute to the H&S team and provide a solid foundation for career progression
The apprentice will study a broad range of safety related topics that they will be able to practically apply and gain exposure to in their day-to-day role for example providing advice on statutory health, safety and environmental requirements that can affect the operation. They will assist the management team in ensuring that the legal and company SHE requirements are implemented. Apprentices will explore how to assist in the development, review and implementation of safe systems of work, investigate incidents, analyse data and present findings to the management team.
Apprentices will learn about the importance of engaging the organisation to support the embedment of a strong safety culture. They will develop skills and behaviours that will support them to influence others to see the benefit of working responsibly, understanding the legal framework and showing how safety, health and environmental management can enhance operational activities.
- Provide advice on the practical implementation of the company’s SHE policies and processes applying generic industry guidance into the context of the workplace.
- Undertake and/or assist with the monitoring, analysis of and reporting of SHE performance.
- Assist and/or manage the investigation of accidents, incidents, dangerous occurrences, near misses and other incidents as directed.
- The range of work activities in a given situation and identify how to prioritise and scope out the hazards with the potential to cause harm and/or loss.
- Devising a business justification e.g. cost/benefit analysis to influence managers.
What qualifications will I gain?
The SHE apprenticeship is a level 3 apprenticeship which is equivalent to an A level education. Upon completion of the course, apprentices will not only receive invaluable learning, development and professional experience, they will also gain a nationally recognized Safety, Health and Environment Level 3 apprenticeship and TechIOSH accreditation. Upon completion, learners will be able to join the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) at TechIOSH level. They will also be eligible to join the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) at Affiliate level.
All apprenticeships have a functional skills element, which is a government requirement. Therefore, apprentices who do not already have Level 2 in English and Math will need to achieve this level in functional skills prior to the completion of their apprenticeship. These functional skills will be delivered by the training provider alongside the apprenticeship learning.
